Before the Augustinian Order became a centuries-long history, there was a man in North Africa wrestling with one of the deepest questions of the human soul.
In ancient Hippo Regius, Augustine was not simply building a legacy. He was searching—through faith, philosophy, doubt, human weakness, friendship, memory, and the restless desire for truth.
More than 1,600 years later, that search still speaks to us.
I am an independent author from Algeria, writing from the land of ancient Hippo Regius, where Augustine served as Bishop. My recent work, Saint Augustine and the Philosophy of Hippo Regius: Wisdom from Ancient North Africa, explores Augustine not merely as a historical figure, but as a thinker shaped by the world in which he lived—and whose ideas continued far beyond it.
