These were requested at the end of last night's session. Sessorianus 55 - the earliest surviving manuscript of Confessions, probably copied between 475–590. Book 5 is organized explicitly around the moves from Carthage, Rome, and to Milan. The School of Athens by Raphael. Many of the "natural philosophers" that Augustine read and compared with Mani's writings are depicted in this painting. The Universe according to Mani from a 13th c. Chinese hanging scroll measuring 5 feet long. The state of the art in Astronomy by the third century... the superiority of a rational account of planetary movements left a lasting impression on Augustine. A near contemporary mosaic of St. Ambrose in his Basilica Sant'Ambrogio, Milan. Epilogue: Faustus reappears in the works of Augustine about ten years after he described the encounter in Confessions.
