Saint Augustine and Hippo Regius: A Perspective from North Africa
What if one of the greatest questions ever asked about the human soul was born not in Rome, not in Athens, but here—in ancient Hippo Regius, on the shores of North Africa?
More than sixteen centuries ago, Augustine of Hippo stood in this land and wrestled with questions that still follow us into the silence of our own lives:
Who are we beneath everything the world has taught us to become?
Why do we search for happiness and still feel incomplete?
Can a restless mind ever find peace?
And what happens when a human being turns inward and begins searching for truth—not outside himself, but within?
I am an independent author from Algeria, writing about Augustine from the land where he lived, taught, struggled, and served as Bishop.
My book, Saint Augustine and the Philosophy of Hippo Regius: Wisdom from Ancient North Africa, grew from a simple conviction: Augustine should not be remembered only as a distant figure from the ancient world. His questions are still alive.
Perhaps that is why, after more than 1,600 years, we are still reading him.
